Four Reasons to Have a Writing Blog

There are so many writing blogs. In fact, I must have over 500 on my reader. And let's face it, we are writers and there are many facets of writing so really, there can be that many. However, if you're considering starting a blog and you want it to be about your passion--writing--here are some reasons to start yet ANOTHER writing blog.

(1) All writers are different - what works for you as a writer may not work for another writer but often writers fall into categories (panster/plotter, write-first-edit-later/edit-while-you-write) and your writing tips will ring true or help a group of writers somewhere.

(2) Right post at the right time - I have read some great articles on marketing lately but currently I'm in the editing stages so the posts I will usually read thoroughly are the ones on editing. When I first started writing, I gobbled up the writing articles. And, hopefully someday soon, I will devour any marketing articles I come across because that's the phase I'm in. Writers are always in different phases and so differnt articles will always appeal to someone out there. Even if it's been said before.

(3) It's motivational - I don't know how many times I can read a post about writing or editing--and it will be advice I've heard before hundreds of times--and get off my lazy heiny and write. Thank you, bloggers!

(4) You'll regret not doing it - Someday, after your 50th book, you'll be asked by your publisher to write a memoir or book on writing. Or, you'll be asked a question about your writing life and be glad you wrote it down on your blog. Because, if you're like me, you can't remember what you did last week or remember where your coffee cup is... oh, found it. Remember, people, it's a blog--a weB LOG--a way to keep track of your progress, not only for your crazy stalker fans but for you. How many months did it take you to write the first draft of your first book? You'll know if you kept a log. How many agents did you query before you landed your first contract? You'll know if you kept a log. How naive were you? You'll know if you kept a log.

So, Stardate 12058.3 (and yes geeky fans, this is based on the actual Trekkie formula), Clarissa wrote a post about writing and as of this date, she's on the millionth ninth round of editing her first book (nearly at the end of the round--only two days left) before a few final edit rounds. Take that, memory!
What reasons have I forgot? Why do you blog?

  2. Glad you found it interesting. Yes, posts have helped just at the right time for me as well.

  3. Clarissa - Those really are wonderful reasons to have a writing blog! One other reason I blog is that it's good practice and keeps me disciplined and in shape for my own writing.

  4. I wonder if Queen Elizabeth 1 would comment and follow Shakespeare's writing blog if they had it in their days :)

  5. I blog for the fun of it! I'm not really a writerly blog - I just like blogging fun and silly things! Oh and to inform the nice woman who rescued Charlie how Charlie is doing! :-)

But for serious writerly bloggers - these are fab reasons to be doing a writerly blog! Yay! Take care

  6. For the same reasons you do Clarissa, but also for the support and camaraderie. The friendships I've made through blogging are just amazing!

We are all on the same road to publication. Many of our friends are a head with novels already published, but they are around to lend a helping hand and encouragement for us who are a few miles back and not quite at the first marker yet.

At this stage I am on the final edit of my second novel. My first still hasn't found a home, but I am hopeful that someday the right agent will fall in love with it.

My second novel has some interest, but I still need to polish and beef it up a bit. So here's to the final edit... raises coffee cup.

    Good luck Clarissa...

  7. Wonderful reminders Clarissa! The number one reason I blog is that if I tell you all that I'm going to do something - I will do it. Weird but true.

  9. Good post Clarissa.

For me, blogging has been an interesting journey. With my interests in crime and missing persons, it has been rewarding to be contacted by the families of those missing and families of victims who thank me for telling their loved one's story.

Also, connecting with others from around the world was not something I intended to do, but has certainly been rewarding.

  10. Love your reasons for blogging - all good ones. I also blog to have contact with other writers I wouldn't meet any other way.

  11. Why do I blog? Hmmmmmm.

I think my number one reason was mentioned already by Michael. I am new to the blogosphere, but am simply amazed by the friendships I've already developed.

Writing is such a solitary sport. It's good to have a 24/7 support group at the ready. So many stories of inspiration and struggle, success and failure.

It's good to know we are not alone.
    Have a great week!

  12. I blog for all these reasons. And I find writers' blogs the highest form of motivation for me. Reading what other writers are doing, how they are overcoming the hurdles we all have really inspires me. Good luck with your edits! Hooray for Clarissa and her awesome book!

  13. Great post. I blog for therapy. No not just that. I blog for prosperity sake plus it does help me to get things off my chest. I need to work on my writing skills too. You're blog is great! Keep up the good work. :)

  14. Kristen Lamb said we shouldn't write about writing. I disagree. I've learned tons from bloggers who write about writing. Plus, by writing about writing, it helps me grow as a writer. :D

  15. Good points, Clarissa! I tweeted this. ;)

  16. Crap, guess I need to talk more about writing on my blog. Or write a book about movies, one of the two!

  17. @Margot Kinberg - "One other reason I blog is that it's good practice and keeps me disciplined and in shape for my own writing." That's so true, I can't believe I missed that one!

@DEZMOND - Queen E? She's probably have her own blog. Hmmm, does she have a blog. I know a fake QE twitters on a daily basis...

@Old Kitty - No, don't give up Charlie! He's the highlight of my day, the little white cat!

@Michael Di Gesu - "also for the support and camaraderie. The friendships I've made through blogging are just amazing!" That's so true! I love my blogging buddies! Some day your writing dreams will come true and I'll buy a copy of your wonderful book.

@Jan Morrison - "if I tell you all that I'm going to do something - I will do it." Self-motivation! How cool and idea!

@Slamdunk - what a wonderful reason to blog. Connecting with people around the world and especially those touched by crime are such fulfilling reasons.

@Carol Kilgore - And they are great writers.

@Bryce Daniels - You will find the community so supportive. We buy each others books, we're there when writers get rejected, we're there when writers get accepted. We're there 24/7 like you said.

@KarenG - Thanks, Karen, I couldn't do it without you and your wonderful team.

@Carol Fleisher - Therapy! Great reason. We blog to keep sane. Would some writers of old be different people if the internet and blogging community existed back then? Good question.

  18. @Stina Lindenblatt - enough said. The perfect reason to write about writing--I agree.

    @cherie - thanks!

@Alex J. Cavanaugh - Alex, I love your blog the way it is. All of the things I talk about are only suggestions. Please don't stop your movie reviews, I rely on them!

  19. Good morning, Clarissa. Nice question, thanks for asking. I blog because I love to connect with people. It's that simple. I love reading people's posts and commenting and I love having a daily writing outlet that is so highly interactive.

I am very grateful for blogging!

  20. I completely agree with the statement all writers are different. This is definitely one reason to have a blog. Get your voice out there, show people who you are and how you work. Great post!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. That's why I keep posting promotional tips - they will be good timing for someone.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I blog to keep myself writing every day, to keep my name out there, and to offer the world at large some quality in either the form of information, entertainment, or both!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Great reasons. One of the best, you find after you start blogging, is the camaraderie of other writers.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree that motivation is a huge factor. Some days other writers motivate me, other days I motivate them. Either by sharing tips and tricks, or by sharing the rejections and the bad days when everything went wrong. And I would never, ever have dared to write crime fiction in English if it weren´t for my many blog friends who told me I could do it.

  25. All good points.

One reason I continue to blog is because of the wonderful writing friends I've made.

  26. I blog for the relationships. It's isolating being a writer. It's nice to reach out. If I learn, have help promoting, promote others, and find critique buddies, that's all icing on the cake!

    ReplyDelete
  27. 4 excellent reasons. Thanks for the reminder that it's a web log. Some people seem to forget that.

There are so many wonderful blogs out there but only so much time to read 'em.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Much of what I know about writing is what I learned from the hundreds of articles I've read on the net, so yes, bloggers have helped.

Didn't really think about it as a method or record keeping, but yes, I do have a hidden blog that I use to track my progress on several projects.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Great list of reasons to have a writing blog!

I agree; writing blogs are motivational! Just reading posts about all the things people are doing in the blogosphere sometimes gets me moving.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I don't know what you forgot but these are all excellent reasons for a blog.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Writing blogs are my favourite. I love reading everyone's progress and experience. It's amazing how many times I pick up tips too. I started a writing blog rather than a personal blog too because I don't think I'm that interesting ;)

    ReplyDelete
  32. These are all wonderful reasons for blogging. I started blogging because I wanted to connect with other writers, and I'm so glad I have!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I've enjoyed many of these reasons and results with my blog. One of the main reasons I blog about writing, fiction, and story is that I think it's one way we can understand real life.

I'm also in the process of revamping my old blog to focus on beauty, a tricky topic for sure, but I merely hope to add encouragement to the web log reading realm.

    Thanks for this post!

  34. I'm blogging just for fun, as simple as that. Sometimes I enjoy reading my old posts, sometimes they make me embarrassed (and some posts I go back and delete)

  35. Great points, Clarissa. Blogville is filled with sooooo many interesting, talented, and sharing people. It's amazing how the right blog seems to come along at the right time.

    ReplyDelete
  36. All are great reasons. Like you I can read about the same topics repeatedly because they are all presented in different ways from different perspectives.

When I started my blog, it began as a Halloween business blog for the most part and then I discovered that it really made more sense to be more inclined toward writing, but with an eclectic approach.

  37. I don't know if you forgot any of MY reasons, but it certainly looks complete to me.

I can't tell you how often I've searched through not only my own blog, but other's I've followed to find a specific post that resonated with me. Info that will either make or break my character or writing style.

The blogverse is as changing as the real world.

  38. These are great reasons. I blog for the camaraderie, too. I've met some really amazing people I'm happy to call friends through my blog.

  39. These are all great reasons to blog. Blogging can also give you a short (or long) mental break from your writing. It gives your mind a chance to relax and picks up things without you realizing it. Great post.

  40. Great points. I have been thinking about this lately. I guess I really like the communal aspect that comes with blogging. You can peak into people's world and get to know them. Plus, I have learned a lot from other bloggers. It has been beneficial on so many levels.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I blog for the same reasons as you but, more than anything, it's for the friendship. Sitting in front of a computer all day can make for lonely days and I love to 'chat' to the friends I've made via my blog.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hi Clarissa. Great reasons, and I agree completely. Blogging, as a writer, is a great way of participating in a community of like-minded people who are supportive and kind. Love it! I only hope I give back as much as I gain from it.

  43. Oh, wow. You're getting close to the end of your edits. I'm SO excited for you. I want to see that book in print/on my Kindle or Nook.

Excellent post as always. And as Margot says, posting IS writing, and counts, I think, if we're not currently engrossed in some writing project.

  44. I blog, therefore I am. Its a passion, a way to tell the world your story. And I'm a bit of an introvert, so I can express myself through blogging.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I first started blogging to gain blogging experience so I could apply for those blogging jobs. Little did I know about the community that I was about to enter - it was amazing! The support leaves me teary and speechless at times; I've gained much more than I give. I first aimed at encouraging new writers (in the way that I was encouraged early on). But the blog has since evolved into more diverse topics, everything from links and tips to fiction/non fiction and general conversation starting stuff. One of my favorite things to do now is to just start a conversation by putting my thoughts out there. Love it! Great post, thanks, Clarissa!

  46. I love that you know the stardate :)

People are always saying to me, "REmember the time...?" I'm sorry, but unless it was nosebleedingly hilarious or happened 17 seconds ago, I don't remember the time...

  47. Hi Clarissa .. I don't web log .. but I write a blog - to educate me, stimulate anyone who reads it .. and generally have fun with commenters and other bloggers

I love all the extra learning I get visiting other blogs, and I can pick and choose .. there's no pressure ..

It's a fun pastime as well as a means to an end .. learning the net and the possibilities that are out there ..

and yes a journal would be a good idea too .. but not to share - as you say for future use ..

    Cheers for now .. Hilary

  48. Very interesting Clarissa!
I started my blog thinking it would help me get my writing act together, but it turned into something else altogether...

    ReplyDelete
  49. I like blogging to stay close to the writing community. It's fun sharing stories, ideas, information, and I love getting the support.

    Nice post!

  50. Great points. I like Carol's reason too: community. It's amazing how eye-opening it is to step into this community of writers who are all at different stages of their writing journey.

And Margot makes a good point too: discipline. Blogging on a regular schedule really teaches writing discipline.

And it helps you develop a 21st century style. I notice that some blogs by established writers are terribly written--and have very few followers. They aren't reading other blogs and finding out how people write today.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Great reasons for blogging on writing! I also blog to inform people of things they may not have found elsewhere and to connect with other writers. Plus, I've found that I can ask questions and get answers on there, as well. All in all, it surely doesn't hurt to have another blog about writing. As you pointed out, each is different. The A to Z proved that with how many different variations each person came up with for each letter. Yes, there were some that were the same basic topic, but they were usually written differently, and there were plenty of topics that only one person wrote about that day. I thought that was very interesting.
