Totally awesome! Thank you for the video. When I was in high school, a friend was a student at a state school for the deaf in Mississippi. I so looked forward to her letters. She saw so much others missed.
ReplyDeleteClarissa - Thanks for this video. It really is excellent. There are so many misconceptions about the world of the Deaf, aren't there? I discovered that when I first began to study linguistics, and learned even more from two friends. One's been a teacher for the Deaf and the co-ordinator of a Deaf Education program. The other has also studied ASL and actually did her dissertation on signing.
ReplyDeleteAre people really that naive? How sad....
ReplyDeleteI don't know where I'd use it,but I wouldn't mind learning sign language.
ReplyDeleteGreat video, and yes, there are misconceptions galor. A friend, who is a really intelligent person on most things wondered if deaf people could drive a car. Seriously. He caught me completely off guard. I mean if HE thinks this way, oh, goodness, there is SO much work to be done.
ReplyDeleteThanks for spreading the word one post at a time.
How cool that you used to be a sign language interpreter. I'm actually studying again to get myself back to being as fluent as I was. My hands don't work as good as they used to but my heart is still in it.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't watch the video so I'll have to wait until I'm at home!
I used to know sign language but like all languages if you don't practice it all the time, you lose it. That's where I am now, I don't remember the first thing about it anymore.
ReplyDelete*shakes head at teacher* :(
ReplyDeleteEven though I've never had a real need for it in my personal life, I've always been completely entralled by sign language and would love to learn it. So far I can only do the alphabet!
ReplyDeleteWow! That's all I can really say about that, just wow! Stop in & read O is for Orion
ReplyDeleteoh, wow. people are dense aren't they? However, this is really the way we(humans) act sometimes when faced with "difference".
ReplyDeleteYou know it’s funny, but it is also so say because some people don’t get it.
ReplyDeleteHilarious, but sadly true as well. I took a basic ASL course last year, and we discussed some of the things mentioned in the video. Makes me want to learn more...
ReplyDeletehahaha so funny... and yet sad at the same time.
ReplyDeleteIt's great how more sign language is being used at events so the deaf can understand what's going on.

Oh my goodness...
ReplyDeleteI learned sign language as a child, but have forgotten much of it. Now I have a nephew that is deaf and wish I remembered more sign...but I can still spell. I need to take a refresher course.....
ReplyDeleteThe video is so cute and funny but also a little sad because there is so many misconceptions about deaf people.

Thoughts in Progress
As a early childhood special educator, I've had a couple of deaf children and several with new cochlear implants. Yes, misconceptions...(although they are prevalent in any culture the mainstream doesn't understand, alas...)
ReplyDeleteerica
We have a group of people who are deaf that attend our church and I love watching them. Sign language is really beautiful! Funny video (although sadly true as well)
ReplyDeleteClarissa, I was laughing so hard my stomach hurts. I don't know if I ever told you this , but my 12 year old daughter, Blake is hearing impaired. She has a hearing aid in one ear and a cochlea implant on her left side. She is awesome and has never let this slow her down. She just made varsity cheerleader and we are so proud of her.
ReplyDeleteThis video reminded me of so many of the ignorant and foolish questions that people have asked me. I get the one about driving all the time,"So i guess she will never be able to drive?" I have a hard time explaining to the strangers that ask me that of course she will drive.
Thank you for the enlightning & humorous video.
